Abstract
Melanoma is a made up of melanocytic tumours, and although these only represents 4% of all malignant
skin tumours, they have the worst prognosis. In recent years, there have been advances in metastatic melanoma
treatment, from a situation where there was no effective treatment to now having two therapeutic
innovations: targeted therapies, and immunotherapy. The objective of this paper is bibliographic research
by means of different databases and scientific journals to determine whether or not these new therapies
represent an advantage in terms of efficacy and safety. The results of several studies have demonstrated the
superiority of these treatments versus conventional chemotherapy; indeed, it has been relegated to the third
or fourth line of treatment. In conclusion, the new therapies are more effective and safer than conventional
chemotherapy, particularly the combination therapies.
