Abstract
Canine leishmaniasis is a vector parasitic disease caused by Leishmania infantum in the Mediterranean basin that represents a frequent pathology in the veterinary clinic and a public health problem. Throughout history, many plant products have been used to treat this disease in humans, which is why this paper reviews the use of phytotherapy in canine leishmaniasis. First of all, the results of a bibliographic review of plant product studies made in vitro and in vivo on the Leishmania infantum species are presented, with results of IC50 and relevant effectiveness. Secondly, research based on the Artemisia annua L. species is presented, as the literature shows that preparations from various parts of this plant act upon different species of Leishmania and can be effective in the treatment of canine leishmaniasis.
