Abstract
Pediculosis capitis is currently an active parasitic disease in society. In Spain, the prevalence ranges from 4,9% to 14,0% and, globally, it varies between 13,3% and 49,0%. The etiologic agent is a hematophagous, monoxenous, and estenoxenous insect, the louse Pediculus humanus var. capitis. The adults, nymphs and eggs, called nits, parasitize the head of humans. Collaboration with 29 pharmacies in the province of Barcelona indicates a greater infestation in girls (81,3%) than in boys (18,8%), affecting mainly children between 8 and 11 years old (54,7%). Re-infestations are much more frequent (75%) than primo-infestations (25%). The treatment option mostly recommended is permethrin, although recent studies propose treatments with a physical action mechanism such as silicones (56,9%) due to the development of resistances. Pediculicidal sales show a significant increase in the fall. The preferred dosage form is lotion (46,8%). The effectiveness of permethrin (46,6%) is lower than that of silicones (72,2%).
