Abstract
Depression is a mental disorder which carries a certain social stigma, and do its main treatment, antidepressant drugs. This is one reason that many patients choose other alternatives or do not follow through with adequate therapeutic compliance. An early and specific diagnosis allows the establishment of the most suitable treatment for the patient, which is usually a combination of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. It should be taken into account that depression is not just an organic disease and, as such, it must be addressed from a biopsychosocial perspective, emphasizing the quality of life of the patient, and considering diet, sleep and physical exercise, among other factors. Often, working effectively on these modifiable variables, individuals with a predisposition to suffering depression may significantly improve their quality of life.
