Due to the scope and pace of change, the society tends, increasingly, to deepen their knowledge, why the higher education, research and extension are key part of the cultural, economic and environmentally sustainable for individuals, communities and nations. The World Conference on Higher Education, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), emphasized the role of higher education to serve the society, in order that it should bring its contribution to the definition and treatment the problems that affect the welfare of communities, nations and global society. In Brazil from the seventies, by virtue of Law no. 5540/68, known as the University Reform Law, the extension is now being implemented in universities as a purpose of its activities. The activity focus of this work is the extension activity developed by the Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia (UESB) in the year 2007, which can be understood as the process educational, cultural and scientific links to the teaching and research in an inseparable manner and enables transforming relationship between university and society.

Devido ao alcance e ao ritmo das transformações, a sociedade tende, cada vez mais, a aprofundar seus conhecimentos, razão pela qual a educação superior, a pesquisa e a extensão são parte fundamental do desenvolvimento cultural, socioeconômico e ecologicamente sustentáveis dos indivíduos, das comunidades e das nações. A Conferência Mundial sobre a Educação Superior, da Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, Ciência e Cultura (UNESCO), enfatizou a função da educação superior de servir à sociedade; tendo em vista que a mesma deve aportar sua contribuição para a definição e tratamento dos problemas que afetam o bem-estar das comunidades, das nações e da sociedade mundial. No Brasil a partir da década de setenta, por força da Lei n.º 5.540/68, denominada Lei da Reforma Universitária, a extensão passou a ser implementada nas Universidades como uma de suas atividades fins. A atividade foco deste trabalho é a atividade extensionista desenvolvida pela Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia (UESB), no ano de 2007, que pode ser compreendida como o processo educativo, cultural e científico que articula o ensino e a pesquisa de forma indissociável e viabiliza a relação transformadora entre universidade e sociedade.
